An authorization hold is the reduction in a credit or debit cardholder’s ability to spend by the amount of a pending transaction.

Learn what an authorization hold is and how it can affect your ability to make debit or credit card purchases.

Definition and Example of an Authorization Hold

An authorization hold reduces how much a credit or debit cardholder can spend by the amount they have charged for a purchase that has not cleared yet. It’s a way for the merchant to ensure that the amount you charged is reserved for that transaction.

  • Alternate name: Card authorization, pre-authorization hold, preauth

例如,让我们说你有一个信用卡with a $10,000 credit limit and an available balance of $9,000. You go to the store to make a $100 purchase. As your card is swiped, the merchant transmits the amount of this transaction to your credit card issuer, which places an authorization hold on your account of $100, thereby reducing your available credit limit by $100 to $8,900.

如果您有一个支票账户,余额为10,000美元和1000美元待交易, your available balance will be reduced to $8,900 immediately after presenting your card to make a $100 purchase. This is due to the authorization hold.

The authorization hold amount will typically show as a pending transaction in your account.

How Authorization Holds Work

When a customer uses their credit or debit card to make a purchase, the merchant communicates the amount of the transaction to the card issuer. If the purchaser does not haveavailable credit(in the case of a credit card) oravailable balance(in the case of a debit card) to make the purchase, or their card is otherwise ineligible to complete the purchase, the transaction will be declined.

At some locations—such as hotels, gas stations, and restaurants—the authorization hold may be for some estimated amount since the final amount is not yet known when the card is presented. This is known as an estimated or initial authorization.

cons

  • Protects merchants:
  • Alerts customers to issues with their account:授权持有可以提醒您与您的帐户发布。 虽然having a card declinedmay be embarrassing, it can alert you to potential issues with your account and could even help you avoid overdraft fees in the case of a debit card.

  • 最终可能超过最终销售金额:当估计authorization hold is used, the amount of the hold may end up being greater than the final sale amount, in which case the cardholder’s available credit limit or funds may be unnecessarily limited. For example, if a hotel places a hold for the price of the room plus $100 for incidental charges but you don’t make any incidental purchases, your ability to spend using that card would have been limited by the $100 amount unnecessarily. The same may be true at a gas station—if a gas station routinely places $50 authorization holds on cards, cardholders who spend less than that at the pump may see their available credit or funds reduced by more than the amount they actually spent.

Key Takeaways

  • An authorization happens when a merchant communicates the amount of a credit or debit card purchase to the card issuer to verify that the cardholder is able to complete a transaction, leading to the purchase amount being “held” or made unavailable to use for future purchases.
  • An authorization hold typically releases when the transaction settles, though it could release before then if the settlement date occurs after the authorization hold expiration date.
  • Some merchants, such as hotels or gas stations, may place an estimated authorization hold on a card since the final amount of the purchase is not known when the card is presented.
